Harmonize Fined and Suspended by BASATA Over New Project

Tanzanian singer Harmonize has been fined TSh5 million and suspended from releasing his new project, Kudos, by the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) until his case is resolved. The council claims that the project contains content that is inconsistent with Tanzanian moral values and undermines the dignity of listeners and viewers.

According to the notice issued by BASATA, Harmonize is required to pay the fine within 14 days and has been cautioned regarding his artistic work as the matter is addressed. This decision reflects the council's ongoing efforts to regulate artistic expression in Tanzania, particularly when it comes to content deemed inappropriate.

Harmonize, whose real name is Rajab Abdul Kahali, is a prominent figure in the East African music scene, known for his hit songs and collaborations with various artists. He gained fame as part of the music group WCB Wasafi before launching a successful solo career. His recent works have often sparked discussions about artistic freedom and censorship in the region.

The situation is compounded by the fact that fellow Tanzanian artist Nandy has also faced repercussions from BASATA, being fined TSh3 million for what the council described as indecent dressing during the Miss Universe Tanzania event. This highlights a broader trend within Tanzania's cultural landscape, where artistic expression is frequently scrutinized and subject to regulation by authorities.
