CCTV Footage Reveals Albert Ojwang's Final Moments Before Death

Newly recovered CCTV footage from Nairobi's Central Police Station has shed light on the final movements of Albert Omondi Ojwang before his tragic death while in police custody. The footage, presented in court by investigators from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), shows Ojwang arriving at the station at approximately 9:23 p.m. on June 7, 2025, appearing to be in good physical condition as he walked on his own and made phone calls before being taken into the holding cells.

Hours later, the footage allegedly captures police officers interacting with two unidentified men who were allowed into the cell block where Ojwang was held. Subsequently, he was seen being carried out of the cells unresponsive. Investigators revealed that the CCTV system had been tampered with shortly after his death, but forensic experts managed to recover the deleted footage, which is now a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing murder trial.

Albert Ojwang, a 30-year-old teacher and social media influencer from Homa Bay County, gained a following online through his engaging content. His untimely death has sparked public outrage, leading to widespread protests demanding justice for him. An autopsy confirmed that Ojwang died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck compression, contradicting initial claims from police that his injuries were self-inflicted.

The case has drawn significant attention to police conduct in Kenya, particularly concerning the treatment of individuals in custody. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) confirmed that Ojwang died inside the police cell, not at Mbagathi Hospital as previously stated by the police. The Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Samson Taalam, has been arrested in connection with the tampering of the CCTV footage and Ojwang's death, further intensifying calls for accountability within the police force.
