Concerns Rise After Alex Kiprotich Found Near Masinga Dam
A cloud of concern and speculation has emerged online after reports that Standard Group editor Alex Kiprotich, who was allegedly abducted, was later found dumped near Masinga Dam. The incident has sparked widespread reactions from Kenyans on social media, with many questioning the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and subsequent discovery.
Kiprotich was forcibly taken by four masked men armed with AK-47 rifles on September 1, 2026, while traveling along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road. He was interrogated about the Standard Group's editorial operations during his nine-hour captivity before being released around 2:00 AM on September 2, 2026. He sought refuge at a nearby household before being located by a Standard Group team at approximately 6:30 AM, according to The Standard.
Alex Kiprotich is the Associate Editor at Standard Group, a prominent media organization in Kenya known for its extensive coverage of news and current affairs. His role places him at the forefront of journalism in the country, particularly in a time when press freedom and the safety of journalists are under scrutiny.
This incident follows a previous abduction attempt on June 27, 2026, when armed men in a Toyota Probox tried to seize him as he drove to work in Nakuru. Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita condemned the abduction, describing it as a targeted attack on a journalist for doing his job. He called for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation into both incidents, highlighting the increasing dangers faced by journalists in Kenya.
