Governor Wamatangi Praises Solar Street Lighting Initiative
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has praised his administration’s investment in solar street lighting, highlighting that the county's bus parks and public spaces remained illuminated during a recent nationwide power blackout.
In a statement shared on social media, Wamatangi noted that Kiambu has already installed 12,000 solar streetlights as part of the 'Angaza Kiambu Programme,' with plans to install another 12,000 in the current financial year. He emphasized that this solar-powered infrastructure ensured key public areas continued to operate even as large parts of the country experienced darkness due to the blackout.
Kimani Wamatangi, who has been in office since 2022, is known for his proactive approach to governance and infrastructure development. His administration has focused on enhancing security and extending business hours in various areas through this solar initiative, which is part of a broader strategy to improve public service delivery in Kiambu County.
The solar street lighting project is expected to save Kiambu approximately KSh310 million annually in electricity costs, showcasing a significant shift towards renewable energy. The project is also designed to last up to 20 years, compared to the five-year lifespan of traditional grid-connected lights, and requires minimal maintenance. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts across Kenya to embrace sustainable energy solutions.
In August 2025, Kiambu County unveiled a 23-meter manlift to expedite the installation of solar streetlights, marking the completion of Phase Two of this KSh1 billion project. This commitment to renewable energy not only addresses immediate infrastructural needs but also positions Kiambu as a leader in sustainable urban development.
