Kenya Confirms Four New Cases Of Ebola Bundibugyo Virus

Kenya has confirmed four new cases of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to seven. The latest cases include three healthcare workers who treated the country’s first patient and a male relative of the deceased.

According to the Ministry of Health, all four patients were already in quarantine when they developed symptoms and subsequently tested positive. The three health workers, aged 29, 35, and 32, had been isolated since October 9, while the male relative had been in quarantine since October 6. The initial case involved a 40-year-old Kenyan man who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years and died on October 5 after testing positive for Ebola upon arrival in Nairobi.

The Ministry of Health has been at the forefront of managing this outbreak, with health authorities identifying 130 contacts linked to the first patient. Of these, 128 have been traced and placed in quarantine, while two are still being traced. The ministry has reported that the earlier confirmed patients are stable and responding well to treatment, indicating a controlled response to the outbreak.

In response to the outbreak, Kenya has intensified screening measures at border crossings and airports, particularly for travelers from high-risk countries. An emergency hotline has also been established for individuals concerned about potential exposure or presenting symptoms of Ebola. This proactive approach aims to prevent community-wide transmission of the virus, which, as of now, shows no evidence of occurring.
