Kenyan Celebrities Raise Awareness for Endometriosis
Endometriosis continues to affect millions of women globally, yet remains widely misunderstood and underdiagnosed. In Kenya, several prominent figures have shared their personal battles with the condition, helping to raise awareness and break the silence surrounding it.
Notable personalities such as Natalie Githinji, the late Jahmby Koikai, Corazon Kwamboka, Ciru Muriuki, and Janet Mbugua have openly discussed their experiences with chronic pain, surgeries, and the emotional toll of endometriosis. Githinji, who was diagnosed with the condition in 2016, described her journey as 'hell, disgusting, and death' according to KBC. Koikai, diagnosed at just 13, underwent multiple surgeries before her untimely passing in June 2024 while receiving treatment.
Corazon Kwamboka, a well-known social media influencer and entrepreneur, revealed her struggles with endometriosis in June 2019, emphasizing the importance of speaking out and seeking help. Ciru Muriuki, a media personality, underwent surgery in 2017 to remove ovarian cysts caused by the condition and has since been active in advocacy. Janet Mbugua, a prominent media figure and advocate for women's rights, has also shared her journey, having undergone laparoscopy for deep ovarian endometriosis in 2005.
The collective efforts of these women have significantly contributed to the conversation around endometriosis in Kenya.
