LSK Holds Purple Ribbon March for Slain Lawyers
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) organized a Purple Ribbon March in Nairobi to honor the memories of lawyers Edward Muthee Kariuki and Esther Wairimu Keige, whose tragic deaths have reignited calls for justice and accountability within the legal profession.
During the march, participants, including lawyers and human rights advocates, demanded thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two advocates. LSK President Charles Kanjama condemned the killings, describing them as serious attacks on the legal profession and urging for enhanced protection for legal professionals.
Esther Wairimu Keige, 54, was the Legal Services Manager at the Kenya Forest Service and was reported missing on June 10, 2026. Her body was discovered in a coffee plantation in Juja, Kiambu County, on July 6, 2026. Edward Muthee Kariuki, 30, was the proprietor of Edward Kariuki Law Firm and was found murdered outside his residence in Athi River, Machakos County, on July 5, 2026.
The recent deaths of Keige and Kariuki have sent shockwaves through the legal community, highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety of lawyers in Kenya. The LSK has been vocal about the need for better protection measures for legal professionals, especially in light of these incidents. The Purple Ribbon March aimed to bring attention to these issues and demand accountability from authorities.
