Maxine Wahome Acquitted in Boyfriend's Murder Case
Rally driver Maxine Wahome has been acquitted of murder charges in the case concerning the death of her boyfriend, Asad Khan. The High Court in Nairobi ruled on July 28, 2026, that the prosecution had failed to establish a case against her, leading to her release.
Justice Lilian Mutende stated that the prosecution could not provide sufficient evidence linking Wahome to the fatal injuries sustained by Khan, who died in December 2022 following a domestic incident. The court noted that out of the 29 witnesses presented by the prosecution, none could directly connect Wahome to the cause of Khan's death. Throughout the trial, Wahome maintained that Khan had been the aggressor during their altercation.
Maxine Wahome is a well-known figure in the Kenyan motorsport scene, recognized for her achievements as a rally driver. She gained significant attention not only for her racing career but also for the high-profile nature of her legal battle following Khan's tragic death, which dominated headlines for years.
The case has sparked intense public debate, with many Kenyans expressing their support for Wahome's acquittal, emphasizing their belief in her innocence. Conversely, there remains a segment of the population that continues to mourn Khan, reflecting on the complexities surrounding domestic violence issues in Kenya. This incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of women in similar situations and the legal system's handling of domestic violence cases.
