Millie Odhiambo Speaks Out on Violence Against Women
Millie Odhiambo has shared a distressing account of violence against women who supported the "Wantam" movement in the Coast region, revealing the alarming risks faced by female activists.
During her recent visit to Mombasa, Millie recounted meeting a woman who had been a victim of violence after speaking at the Linda Mwananchi Forum in Sindo. The woman, who is an aspiring Woman Representative in Kwale County, was in a wheelchair and still suffering from severe pain after being discharged from a hospital in Kisumu.
Millie Odhiambo Mabona is a prominent Kenyan politician and lawyer, serving as the Member of Parliament for Suba North Constituency since 2008. Known for her advocacy for women's and children's rights, she founded The CRADLE Children's Foundation in 2000 to enhance children's legal rights in Kenya. Her commitment to social justice has made her a notable figure in the fight against gender-based violence.
The recent violence against women in the Coast region highlights ongoing issues in Kenya regarding the safety of activists. Despite the enactment of the SGBV Prevention and Protection Act in Kwale County in 2023, which aims to create a framework for addressing sexual and gender-based violence, enforcement remains weak. Organizations like the Coalition on Violence Against Women (COVAW) continue to advocate for improved protections, but challenges persist, including inadequate facilities and limited police response capabilities.
