Ruto and Dangote Launch $16 Billion Oil Refinery in Lamu

President William Ruto and Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote have officially launched the Dangote East Africa Oil Refinery in Lamu, marking a significant industrial investment for Kenya.

The refinery, estimated at approximately $16 billion (KSh2.2 trillion), is designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, supplying refined petroleum products to Kenya and neighboring countries. According to Citizen, the project is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and support related industries, including chemicals, fertilizer, and packaging.

William Ruto, who has been in office since September 2022, is known for his focus on economic development and infrastructure projects. Aliko Dangote, one of Africa's richest men, is recognized for his investments across various sectors, including cement and agriculture, and this refinery marks a significant expansion into the oil sector.

The broader situation includes ongoing legal challenges from local residents regarding land rights, which could impact the project's timeline. The Kenyan government has also indicated that ordinary citizens will have an opportunity to invest in the refinery through the Nairobi Securities Exchange, as reported by Tukio. This move aims to enhance local participation in the project and foster economic growth in the region.
