Sakaja Faces Criticism for Late 2027 Campaign Kickoff
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing backlash from fans for what they perceive as a late start to his 2027 re-election campaign. This criticism follows a recent video he shared of himself attempting to clean up a sewage area in the city, which some believe is more of a photo opportunity than a substantive campaign effort.
In addition to his cleanup efforts, Sakaja has launched a podcast titled 'Nairobi, Let's Talk,' aimed at engaging residents in discussions about city development and service delivery. However, some fans feel he should prioritize addressing pressing issues affecting Nairobi residents over his podcasting endeavors. As reported by Tuko, the podcast debuted on September 2, 2026, and has elicited mixed reactions from the public.
Johnson Sakaja, a former senator, was elected as Nairobi's governor in August 2022. He is known for his ambitious plans to improve the city's infrastructure and service delivery. His administration has faced challenges, particularly in fulfilling campaign promises, such as the Dandora waste-to-energy project, which has been delayed due to tariff negotiations and a shift towards recycling initiatives, as noted by People Daily.
Amidst these challenges, Sakaja's administration has been proactive in environmental management, recently contracting over 3,500 youths for a clean-up campaign in anticipation of El Niño rains, which are expected to exacerbate drainage issues in the city. This initiative reflects his commitment to addressing Nairobi's environmental concerns, although critics argue that more focus is needed on immediate urban challenges rather than media engagements.
