Suspect Arrested in Murder of Joy Kanini Gathu

DCI detectives have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu after he was allegedly intercepted while attempting to flee to Uganda.

The suspect, John Nderitu Mureithi, 25, was apprehended along the Nanyuki–Isiolo Road in Meru County. During the arrest, detectives recovered four mobile phones, including one believed to belong to Gathu, which is now a key exhibit in the ongoing investigation. Police reports indicate that a confrontation between Mureithi and Gathu at his residence in Nyeri County on June 9, 2026, turned fatal, leading to the tragic events that followed.

John Nderitu Mureithi is not a public figure but has become known due to the severity of the allegations against him. The case has drawn significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the young age of the victim, Joy Kanini Gathu. Gathu's murder has sparked conversations about safety and violence against women in Kenya.

The investigation reveals that after the confrontation, Mureithi allegedly dismembered Gathu's body and disposed of the remains in various locations to conceal the crime. Mureithi is currently detained at Kiganjo Police Station and is expected to be presented in court on July 13, 2026, as detectives seek custodial orders to facilitate the completion of their investigations. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding gender-based violence and the need for systemic changes to protect vulnerable individuals.
