Tanzania Mourns Hafidh Ameir Hassan, First Gentleman
Tanzania is in mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country's first-ever First Gentleman. Hassan passed away on September 7, 2026, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for a heart condition.
The announcement was made by Tanzania's Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi during a national address. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences, stating, 'President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,' reflecting the deep ties and respect shared between the two nations.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania's first First Gentleman in 2021 when his wife, Samia Suluhu Hassan, assumed the presidency. The couple married in 1978 and had four children, including Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves in the Zanzibar House of Representatives, highlighting the family's continued involvement in Tanzanian politics.
As the nation prepares for funeral arrangements in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, the loss of Hassan is felt not only by his family but also by the entire country. His role as First Gentleman was significant, as he supported President Samia in her leadership, especially during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple's partnership symbolized a new era in Tanzanian politics, with Samia being the first female president in the country's history.
