Tension Erupts in Ol Kalou Over Police Bag Inspections
Tension briefly erupted in Ol Kalou after residents reportedly stopped police officers and demanded that they open their bags amid allegations they were carrying election materials. The officers were reportedly denied entry into Ol Kalou Comprehensive School until the bags were inspected in the presence of members of the public.
This incident comes as heightened security and increased public scrutiny surround the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, scheduled for July 16, 2026. Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja had assured Kenyans of a peaceful electoral process, deploying over 1,000 police officers, including specialized units like the GSU, ASTU, and DCI, to safeguard the election, according to National Police.
The Ol Kalou by-election has garnered significant attention, particularly due to allegations of voter bribery. The Elections Observation Group (ELOG) reported that its observers documented incidents where voters were allegedly offered between Ksh200 and Ksh5,000 during the campaign, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, as noted by People Daily.
Political tensions are also evident, with Cleophas Malala, Deputy Party Leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), accusing security agencies of attempting to intimidate voters through a heavy police presence designed to suppress turnout. In contrast, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) dismissed these allegations as baseless, asserting that they were unfounded and lacked evidence, according to The Star.
