William Ruto Defends State House Renovations Amid Criticism
President William Ruto has defended the ongoing renovations at State House, dismissing criticism over the project and insisting the upgrades were necessary.
Speaking on the matter, Ruto stated that the State House was in poor condition when he took office, claiming the toilets were not functioning properly and parts of the roof were leaking whenever it rained. He emphasized that the previous state of the residence was inadequate for presidential functions, describing it as 'juakali' — a term used to refer to informal, makeshift solutions in Kenya.
William Ruto, who became the President of Kenya in September 2022, has been known for his focus on economic development and infrastructure improvement. His administration has faced numerous challenges, including economic pressures and political opposition, which have influenced public perception of his governance.
The renovations at State House have been met with mixed reactions. While Ruto argues that the upgrades are essential for a functioning presidential residence, the Architectural Association of Kenya has raised concerns regarding the loss of the building's cultural significance. The total cost of the renovations is approximately Ksh 1.7 billion, and the project is nearing completion, which has sparked debates about government spending priorities during a time of economic hardship for many Kenyans.
