Concerns Raised Over Illicit Liquor Video in Kenya

Two young men have sparked concern online after sharing a video that appears to show them preparing what looks like illicit liquor. This video has surfaced amid increasing worries about the production and sale of unregulated and counterfeit alcohol in Kenya.

The authenticity and contents of the drink shown in the video have not been independently verified. However, this incident highlights a growing issue in the country, where illicit alcohol has become a significant part of the market.

In recent months, authorities have ramped up efforts to combat the illegal alcohol trade. In November 2023, police in Kiambu County seized 3,800 bottles of counterfeit alcohol, including popular brands like Chrome and Kibao, as part of a broader crackdown on illicit liquor production. The operation also uncovered a large cache of counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps and other materials used in the production of fake alcohol, indicating a well-organized operation behind the scenes.

This crackdown is part of a larger initiative by Kenyan authorities to address the rampant issue of counterfeit alcohol, which has been linked to numerous health risks and fatalities. Earlier in 2023, over 1.7 million liters of unregulated brews were impounded in various operations across the country, showcasing the scale of the problem. The total value of the illicit goods seized in Kiambu alone was estimated at Ksh. 7,836,500, with significant losses in taxes due to the counterfeit operations, as reported by Citizen.
