Jalang’o Ready for Nairobi Senate Race Against Winnie Odinga
Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has declared his readiness to contest for the Nairobi senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election. This announcement comes on the heels of Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, also expressing her intention to vie for the same position.
Jalang’o emphasized that while he respects everyone's right to run for office, he is prepared for the political battle ahead. He stated, 'To the wire, I’m ready,' indicating his determination to secure the seat amid growing competition.
Winnie Odinga has emerged as a significant political figure in her own right, leveraging her family's legacy. She announced her candidacy on October 15, 2026, during a memorial event for her father at Migwena Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County. Her decision to contest is motivated by the opportunity presented by the current Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's pursuit of higher office, as reported by Kenyans.
The political landscape in Nairobi is heating up as both Jalang’o and Winnie Odinga are members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which has committed to conducting free and fair nominations for the senatorial seat. This upcoming contest is poised to attract significant attention, given both candidates' strong political backgrounds and the influence of the Odinga family in Kenyan politics.
As the 2027 elections approach, the rivalry between Jalang’o and Winnie Odinga will be closely monitored, reflecting broader themes of generational change and political legacy in Kenya. The outcome of this contest could have implications not just for their careers, but also for the ODM party's direction in Nairobi.
