Mike Sonko Supports Family After Loss of Quintuplets
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has offered financial support to the family of Mercy Kanini and her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, who tragically lost all five of their newborn quintuplets.
Mercy Kanini delivered the quintuplets through a rare normal delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital on September 13, 2026. The infants, born extremely prematurely at 25 weeks and weighing between 630 and 800 grams, were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized neonatal care. Despite medical efforts, all five babies passed away, with the fifth infant dying a day after the other four, as reported by The Star.
Mike Sonko, known for his philanthropic efforts and controversial tenure as Nairobi Governor, has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and social issues. His gesture of financial assistance comes as a means of solidarity to the grieving family during this incredibly difficult period.
The loss of the quintuplets has drawn public attention to the challenges faced by families with premature births in Kenya, highlighting the need for better neonatal care and support systems. Sonko's involvement reflects a broader trend of public figures stepping in to assist families in distress, especially during times of tragedy.
