Okoth Obado Found Guilty in Sharon Otieno Murder Case
Former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, alongside his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County Clerk Caspal Obiero, has been found guilty of the 2018 murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno. This verdict concludes one of Kenya’s most high-profile murder cases, which has captivated the nation since its inception.
Justice Cecilia Githua delivered the judgment, stating that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, establishing that the accused acted with malice aforethought in causing Sharon's death. The court found a strong chain of circumstantial evidence linking Obado, Oyamo, and Obiero to Sharon’s abduction and murder, which occurred in September 2018 when she was seven months pregnant. The court noted that Obado had a motive to eliminate Sharon to prevent their illicit relationship and her pregnancy from becoming public, according to The Standard.
Okoth Obado served as the Governor of Migori County from 2013 until 2022, known for his controversial political career and various legal challenges. His involvement in the murder case has overshadowed his political legacy, turning him into a polarizing figure in Kenyan politics. Sharon Otieno's tragic story gained national attention, highlighting issues of gender-based violence and the treatment of women in society.
The trial, which began in 2018, has been closely followed by the public and media, with many viewing it as a litmus test for justice in cases involving powerful individuals. The convictions of Obado, Oyamo, and Obiero come at a time when discussions about accountability and justice for victims of violence against women are increasingly prominent in Kenya. This case has also sparked conversations about the implications of political power and its intersection with crime.
