President Ruto's Official Website Hacked for Ransom
The official website of the President of the Republic of Kenya, president.go.ke, has reportedly been hacked, with its homepage replaced by a ransom demand targeting President William Ruto. The hackers are demanding a payment of five Bitcoins.
A check of the website revealed that the official content had been replaced with insulting messages, a Bitcoin wallet address, and threats to release unspecified information unless the ransom was paid. State House has confirmed that it is aware of the incident and stated that its ICT team is currently addressing the matter.
William Ruto, who has been in office since September 2022, is known for his focus on economic reforms and has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, particularly during the 2022 presidential elections. His administration has faced various challenges, including economic issues and public dissatisfaction regarding governance.
This hacking incident has raised serious concerns about the security of government websites in Kenya. The breach comes at a time when there is increasing scrutiny over the digital security measures in place for public institutions, particularly as Kenya continues to embrace digital platforms for government services. The incident may prompt discussions on enhancing cybersecurity protocols within the government.
