Sauti Sol Condemns Azimio La Umoja For Unauthorized Use Of Their Song

Kenyan Afro-pop band Sauti Sol has publicly condemned the Azimio la Umoja coalition for allegedly using their song 'Extravaganza' without authorization in campaign advertisements. The band has declared their apolitical stance amidst the ongoing political discourse.

In a statement, Sauti Sol expressed their disapproval of the Azimio campaign's actions, emphasizing that they did not grant permission for the use of their music. This situation echoes a similar incident in May 2022 when the band accused Azimio of using their song in a campaign video featuring Martha Karua as Raila Odinga's running mate, which raised questions about music licensing in political contexts.

Sauti Sol, composed of members Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano, Savara Mudigi, and Polycarp Otieno, is one of Kenya's most celebrated music groups, known for their hit songs and significant contributions to the Kenyan music scene. Their blend of Afro-pop and contemporary sounds has garnered them a massive following both locally and internationally.

The controversy surrounding the use of Sauti Sol's music has drawn attention to the complexities of music licensing, particularly in political campaigns. The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) had previously clarified that Azimio had obtained the necessary licenses to use the song, attributing the confusion to misinterpretations by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) regarding the licensing process. Meanwhile, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), to which Azimio is affiliated, expressed appreciation for Sauti Sol's music, framing the use of their song as a gesture of respect for the band’s contributions to Kenyan culture.

Despite the clarification, the incident has led to a backlash from some fans, who have reportedly unsubscribed from Sauti Sol's social media channels in response to the band's stance. MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua criticized this reaction as juvenile, urging fans to distinguish between the band’s music and the political landscape.
