Sakaja Faces Backlash Over Tribute to Raila Odinga

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing criticism from supporters of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga after he shared a tribute and announced his attendance at a candle-lighting ceremony in Odinga's honor.

Some of Odinga's supporters have questioned Sakaja's intentions, citing his political history and lack of support for Odinga during his presidential campaigns from 2007 to 2022. This skepticism reflects the complex political landscape in Kenya, where allegiance and past actions are closely scrutinized.

Johnson Sakaja, who was elected Governor of Nairobi in 2022, is known for his previous role as the Senator for Nairobi County. He has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, often navigating the intricate dynamics of alliances and rivalries. Raila Odinga, on the other hand, served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and was a key figure in Kenyan politics until his passing on October 15, 2025.

The candle-lighting ceremony, organized by Lang'ata MP Phelix Odiwour, commonly known as Jalang'o, is part of a month-long program by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to commemorate Odinga's life and legacy. Scheduled from 3 pm to midnight at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, this event marks the beginning of ODM's "Mwezi wa Baba" program, which includes various memorial activities throughout October. Other political leaders, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, are also expected to attend the gathering, highlighting the event's significance within the party and the broader political context.
