Sharon Otieno's Mother Pleads for Leniency for Obado
Mildred Ouma, the mother of Sharon Otieno, has made headlines after pleading with the court to spare former Migori Governor Okoth Obado a custodial sentence during the sentencing proceedings for her daughter's murder.
Ouma expressed that the two families have reached a point of forgiveness and reconciliation, requesting that Obado be given a non-custodial sentence. This unexpected plea has sparked a wave of reflection among Kenyans regarding the complexities of forgiveness in the face of such a tragic loss.
Sharon Otieno, a 26-year-old student at Rongo University, was abducted and brutally murdered in September 2018 while seven months pregnant. The court found that Obado was the father of her unborn child, who also died as a result of the attack. In July 2026, the High Court convicted Obado, his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo, and former Migori County clerk Caspal Obiero for the murder, establishing a clear chain of circumstantial evidence linking them to the crime, according to Kenyans.co.ke.
The sentencing hearing for Obado and his co-accused is set for September 16, 2026. The case has drawn significant public attention, not only due to the heinous nature of the crime but also because of Obado's high-profile political background. As a former governor, Obado's conviction has raised questions about accountability and justice in Kenya's political landscape. The Otieno family has also sought compensation for the financial and emotional toll of Sharon's death, estimating their expenses at Sh4.7 million, including court costs and funeral expenses, as reported by The Star.
